Sam Houston men's golf posted a third-round 296, led by freshman Mason Weld's final-day 73 to finish ninth at the inaugural Bayou City Collegiate Classic at 37-over, 901 from Pearland's par-72, 7,272-yard Golfcrest Country Club.
Weld (79-73-73), who moved on five spots on the final day, and junior Andrew Ertel (80-71-74) each captured a tie for 38th among the field of 81 competitors at 9-over, 225. Houston secured the team title at 6-over, 870.
“He's a really solid player,” fourth-year head coach Brandt Kieschnick said. “He doesn't make a lot of mistakes. He's very disciplined and good mentally.”
After shooting an opening-round 311 and sitting in 13th, the Bearkats clawed back to post the fourth-lowest second-round score (294) led by Ertel's 1-under. The top-10 finisher was the second of the season as the team took eighth in the season-opening Sam Hall Intercollegiate.
“We just shot a bad first round but played well the last two rounds,” Kieschnick said. “We got out of the gates slow but I thought they competed really well. I think this team is doing the right things. I think we'll get better each week and that's all I ask.”
Freshman Camden DeBonis (76-77-74) secured a tie for 45th at 11-over, 227, thanks to the best round of his tournament on the final day. Junior Jarred Jeter (75-81-71), competing as an individual, followed closely behind in a tie for 45th at 11-over, 227, while sophomore Jake McCrory (80-73-75) took a tie for 52nd at 12-over, 228.
Redshirt freshman Jesse Massengale (78-76-81), competing individually, secured a tie for 66th at 19-over, 235, while freshman Dominick Gennuso (76-80-80) finished in a tie for 68th at 20-over, 236.
With Houston pacing the field, North Texas finished second (872), followed by Kansas (878), Texas State (881), Lamar (883), UTSA (886), Rice (892), McNeese State (899), Sam Houston (901), Houston Baptist (910), Tulsa (911), Abilene Christian (913), Denver (920) and Southern Mississippi (928).
“Rice is a great program and Houston is a phenomenal program,” Kieschnick said about hosting the event alongside the two teams. “I'm good friends with both coaches and we enjoyed working together. I think it creates a fun atmosphere for the kids.”
Sam Houston returns to action next Monday-Tuesday at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, hosted by the New Mexico State University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.
“I think it's good to step off the course and go right into another event,” Kieschnick said. “Last year we finished second there. We'll apply what we learned this week. These guys will be ready.”
