
Weld paces Bearkats after Day 1 in Las Cruces

Sam Houston State's Mason Weld fired a second-round 72 to take a tie for 28th into the final day of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate from the New Mexico State Golf Course in Las Cruces on Monday, but the Bearkats will have some ground to gain, sitting in 11th through 36 holes.
The Bearkats shot a 23-over, 591, and trail Day 1 leader UTEP (4-over, 572) by 19 strokes at the par-71, 7,242-yard course. Weld, a freshman who has come on strong for Sam Houston, fired a 5-over, 147, and is nine strokes behind Lamar's Mans Berglund (4-under, 138).
With the five-way tie for 28th, Andrew Ertel and Jake McCrory are among seven golfers in 33rd at 6-over, 148. Ertel and McCrory each followed up an impressive opening-round 72's with a second-round 76's.
McCrory had his way with the course's four par 3's, shooting 1-under while Ertel erupted for 3-under on the course's three par 5's.
Camden DeBonis ranks among six golfers tied for 40th at 7-over, 149. The freshman rebounded from a first-round 76 to fire a second-round 73, moving up nine spots on the leaderboard.
Meanwhile, Dominick Gennuso takes a 13-over, 155 into the clubhouse in a tie for 71st, but adjusted nicely after an opening-round 82 to fire a second-round 73 and move up 11 spots. Jesse Massengale (81-85) finished tied for 75th following a 14-over, 156.
Southland Conference foe Lamar enters Tuesday in second (578), followed by host-New Mexico State (579), Grand Canyon (581), Colorado State (582), Odessa College (583), Wichita State (586), Northern Illinois (587), UT-Arlington (589), Stephen F. Austin (590), Sam Houston (591), UT-Rio Grande Valley (600), Incarnate Word (603) and Western New Mexico (604).
