The Sam Houston women's tennis team heads to the biggest fall tournament in which they will play as they travel to College Station for the 2015 USTA/ITA Texas Regional at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, Thursday through Monday Oct. 22-26 hosted by Texas A&M.
The Bearkats have performed well in each of their previous three tournaments at Tyler, Houston and Natchitoches, La. Two weeks ago the Kats picked up 10 wins against singles players from six other Southland squads that competed in the event hosted by Northwestern State.
The biggest problem for all the teams this weekend, however, could be the weather with a 40 to 80 percent chance of rain every day until Monday.
Last year at the ITA Regional in Waco, Fabienne Gettwart, now a sophomore, made Sam Houston history by advancing to the round of 16 at the annual event. The stands as the best performance ever by a Bearkat in a tournament which features 128 of the top NCAA Division I players in Texas each fall.
In Sam Houston's last outing, Maddie Mortimore and Emma Barkovic each reach the finals of the number four singles flight. Gettwart and Mila Milanovic both won the back-draw at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively
“So far this fall, we've had some good wins and been close in losses to some very good players,” Sam Houston head coach Jim Giachino said. “This is an outstanding tournament where we're going to get some great competition if the weather will cooperate.”
Complete tournament results will be available on the USTA/ITA Texas Regional daily scoreboard.
