Two days after moving up to No. 4 in the NTCA national women's bowling rankings, the Sam Houston women's flexed their muscles by winning all six baker team matches on the first day of the Hawk Classic..
The event, hosted by the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore at the Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Delaware, features a field that includes 15 nationally ranked teams.
The Bearkats knocked down more than 1,000 pins in each of their matches Friday. Sam Houston opened with a 1029 – 866 victory over No. 23 Franklin Pierce and followed up with a 1,082 – 911 win against No. 24 Adelphi.
Next the Kats topped No. 15 Sacred Heart 1,014 – 778 and No. 13 Saint Francis (Pa.) 1,036 – 978. The women completed the day with wins over No. 16 Kutztown 1,040 – 856 and No.22 Monmouth 1,060 – 923.
The 6-0 dual match mark plus an pinfall average of 208.7 for the day has the Bearkats ranked in first place in the tournament standings.
Monmouth is in second with a 4-2 record and 196.5 pinfall average. Vanderbilt (5-1, 189.6), Maryland-Eastern Shore (5-1, 189.2) and LIU-Brooklyn (5-1, 188.8) rank third through fifth. Sam Houston was the only squad in the tournament to go 6-0 for the day.
Saturday, Sam Houston will participate in traditional team play. The tournament will end on Sunday with best of seven bracket action. Seedings on Sunday will be decided by total pins from the first two sessions.
“Today was a great day for us,” head coach Brad Hagen said. “We got to play in an area of the lane where we could get in and chase it left with which traditionally we are very productive.”
The event is the fourth tournament on Sam Houston's fall schedule. The Bearkats won the All-State Sugar Bowl Classic hosted by Tulane in New Orleans. Sam Houston placed fifth at the Fairleigh Dickinson Jersey Jamboree and won eight of their 14 matches at the Nebraska Big Red Classic. The Kats sport a 24-14 overall dual match record this season.
