Patrick Banks hitter a jumper from the middle of the lane with two seconds left for the winning basket as Wiley College defeated Sam Houston 67-66 in a non-conference men's basketball game Sunday night.
The Wildcats' Kevondric Davis led both teams with 26 points including a follow shot the gave Wiley a 65-64 lead with 47 seconds left. Following a turnover and a missed three-point attempt, Sam Houston's Albert Almanza sank two free throws to put Sam Houston up 66-65 with nine seconds remaining.
Almanza led the Bearkats with 15 points. Torry Butler added 13 and Dakarai Henderson totaled 11.
Wiley College from the Red River Conference stands 9-1 for the season while Sam Houston dropped to 2-4.
The contest was tied seven times with 10 lead changes. Sam Houston led at intermission 33-30 and led by 10 points, 60-50 with 6:36 to play. A free throw by Jamal Williams gave the Bearkats a 64-56 lead with 2:30 remaining.
Davis started an 9-0 run for Wiley with a three-pointer at the 2:24 mark. Fouled on the shot, his free throw completed a four-point play that cut the margin to 64-60. Another Davis three-point by Davis at the 1:48 mark put the Wildcats within a point, 64-63.
Both teams totaled 32 rebounds with Sam Houston's Torry Butler pulling down eight boards and Banks grabbing seven rebounds.
Sam Houston travels to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech Wednesday.
