
Sam Houston secures 11th in final fall tournament

The Sam Houston State women's golf team recovered nicely from a challenging second round, posting a final-round 302 and three-day 921 at the Little Rock Golf Classic to take 11th at the par-72, 6,167-yard Diamonte Country Club from Hot Springs, Ark. in the final fall tournament.
Jenna Phillips paced play for the Bearkats, firing a third-round 75, cutting three strokes off her second round, to move up four spots for a 25th-place tie, carding a 228. Nicole Budnik (75-81-74-230) saved her best round for last to move up 10 spots and finish tied for 32nd.
Sarah Black (76-74-81-231), who entered her final round in 28th, fell back to 37th while Heather Shake (78-82-77-237) moved up 10 spots on Tuesday to take 58th. Celeste Lo (79-85-76-240) also leaped 10 spots to finish in a tie for 67th.
Central Arkansas, who entered the final round with a commanding 10-stroke lead, fell to second, as Missouri State captured the tournament title by three strokes at 887. The Bears grabbed the individual title thanks to Emma Svensson's (69-67-72) three-day 208.
Little Rock (896) rounded out the top three followed by Houston Baptist (900), Eastern Michigan (900), Oral Roberts (901), Wichita State (906), Arkansas State (911), Western Michigan (915) and UTEP (919) among top-10 teams.
After the winter break, Sam Houston returns to action Feb. 14-15 at the Texas State All There August Challenge in New Braunfels. The two-day event takes place at Landa Park Golf Course.
The Bearkats captured one team title this fall, doing so at the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout. There, Shake secured her first individual title, doing so in just her third NCAA Division I tournament. One week later, the junior took a second-place finisher at the Bearkat Women's Invitational.
Budnik logged another successful fall, earned four top-15 finishes including a fifth-place mark in the season opener in Memphis. There, Budnik posted a final-round 71, the second lowest score of the tournament.
