Maddie Mortimore and Carrie Casey posted the singles wins and Mortimore and Khee Yen Wee paired for doubles victory as Sam Houston battled Wyoming in women's tennis on the first day of the Blue and Red Classic hosted by SMU Friday.
Casey won over Elisa Kowik 3-6 7-6 6-4 while Mortimore defeated Tessa Van def Plug 6-2 6-4 at number five and six singles respectively. Mortimore and Yee teamed to beat Dorothya Jonas and Miranda Talbert 7-5 at number three doubles.
Fabienne Gettwart took Magda Stual to three sets 4-6 7-5 6-2 at number one singles. Wee lost to Nagya Tokaras 7-5 7-6 at number two. Janos defeated Ema Barkoric 6-0 6-1 at number three. Talbert edged Mila Milanovic 6-4 5-7 6-4 at number four singles.
"This was the first dual match atmosphere experience for many of the girls against a nationally ranked team," head coach Jim Giachino said. "We saw some bright spots but when were in a winning position and let it slip away too many times. Once we start playing to win instead of not to lose we will be exceptionally strong."
Gettwart and Milanovic last 6-4 at number one doubles and Casey and Barkovic fell at number two doubles 6-2.
Sam Houston will play Wichita State at noon Saturday and end play Sunday against Tulsa at 9 a.m. The tournament completes Sam Houston's fall schedule.
