Relay win highlights action of UH Ryan Indoor

Camry Grigbsy, Kodii Church, Briana McCall and Ruth Amaku teamed to win the 4x400 relay to highlight competition for the Sam Houston women's track and field team Friday and Saturday at the University of Houston Howie Ryan Invitational.
The quartet motored around the oval with a 3:50.26 clocking to finish 1.57 ahead of runner-up Texas-San Antonio. The Bearkats defeated relay squads from Stephen F. Austin, Texas State and Lamar among other squads.
Amaku, a junior, and Church, a freshman, also posted strong finishes in the 400 meter dash. Amaku was the runner-up with a time of 57.18 and Church placed fourth with a 57.30 clocking.
Ashley Jenkins finished third in the women's weight throw with a distance of 60' 8.5”. Paula Smith posted a fourth place finish in the high jump with a mark of 5' 7”.
Kara Whitson was third and Ashley Thompson placed fifth in the pole vault. Whitson cleared 12' 7.5” while Thompson's top vault was 12' 1.5”.
Danielle Demas posted another solid performance in the 60 meter hurdles. The junior had the second best preliminary time with a 8.53 clocking. She won the semi-finals race with a 8.51 time in the second heat. She placed fourth behind hurdlers from New Orleans, Houston and Texas in the finals with a time of 8.58.
The Bearkat women posted 16 season bests in the meet.
