
Women?s Golf opens spring at Texas State

The Sam Houston State women's golf team will open their spring schedule, at the Texas State Delta Gamma Challenge in New Braunfels, after a strong fall that saw the Bearkats win one tournament and finish runner-up three times.
The Kats took home the ORU Shootout title after being two strokes back of Oral Roberts going into the final round. SHSU finished five strokes ahead of the host Eagles and the combined team score of 880 was a tournament record.
Sam Houston had strong performances at the ULM Fred Marx Invitational, the SHSU Harold Funston Invitational and the UAB Fall Beach Bash finishing second in each event.
Paige Nelson had an outstanding fall and was named Southland Golfer of the Month for October. She was the individual medalist at the ULM Fred Marx Invitational and finished in the top-10 in four of the five tournaments.
Last season's Southland Newcomer of the Year, Alisa White, also had a strong fall, finishing in the top-15 of all five tournaments last semester. Her top performance was third at the UAB Fall Beach Bash.
Nicole Budnik's top finish was fourth at the ORU Shootout. Freshman Sarah Black had a pair of top-10 finishes, at the ORU Shootout and the SHSU Harold Funston Invitational. Transfer Celeste Lo was 12th at SHSU's home event.
This weekend's event will be held on the par-71 6,006 yard course at the Landa Park Golf Club. The tournament will be played Sunday and Monday in New Braunfels.
The field features six teams inside the top 100 of the GolfStat Rankings, Houston, Idaho, New Mexico State, Lamar, UALR and Texas State. In addition to Sam Houston, the remaining teams are Cal State Fullerton, Houston Baptist, Missouri State, Ball State, UTEP, Stephen F. Austin and Youngstown State.
