Sam Houston plays host to a talented UTSA Roadrunner squad that already has defeated two Southland Conference opponents as the pair meets in a non-conference women's tennis dual match Friday at 1 p.m. at the McAdams Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners stand 2-1 for the year after falling to Houston 6-1 in their season opener then knocking off Lamar 5-2 and Incarnate Word 6-1.
The Bearkat women are still looking for their first victory of the season. Sam Houston lost a tight 4-3 battle with UT-Pan American in the season opener and 7-0 to SMU in Dallas last week.
Seniors Olivia Battye and Karen Martinez and junior Maddie Mortimore are returning veterans for the Bearkats. A solid group of newcomers including freshmen Fabienne Gettwart, Mila Milanovic and Caitlyn Mitchell and transfer Bailey VanDyke have strengthened the SHSU women's line-up
UTSA returns seven players from last season's 11-win club, including All-Conference USA performers Miriam Rosell Canudas and Jobea Junger.
Nicole Karaklis was tabbed Conference USA Player of the Week on Jan. 19 after winning her singles match in the Jan. 18 season opener at No. 37 Houston and her singles and doubles contests at Lamar the following day.
Friday's match is the first of two home appearances for the Kats this weekend. Sam Houston will be in action again Saturday at 1 p.m. in an exhibition match against Tyler Junior College.
Next week, the Bearkats go on the road to play in El Paso against UTEP and Northern Colorado and in Las Cruces against New Mexico State.
