Bearkat trio named Preseason All-Southland

Sam Houston State senior outfielders Colt Atwood and Hayden Simerly have been named first team preseason All-Southland conference, while sophomore pitcher Sam Odom is on the second team, the league office announced Wednesday.
Atwood returns to Sam Houston for his senior season after being drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 2014 MLB Draft. He is the leading offensive returner for the Bearkats with a .306 batting average, 83 hits and 40 runs scored last season. The second-team All-Southland player is a three-year starter with 181 career starts in center field.
Simerly hit .256 while playing in all 62 games with 34 RBI last season. The outfielder and designated hitter had 12 doubles, four triples and six homers. Simerly shared the team lead with nine home runs in 2013. The power-hitting lefty has more than 100 career starts for Sam Houston
Odom led the Bearkat pitching staff with a 2.61 ERA and a 10-2 record during his freshman campaign. He became Sam Houston's first Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and first 10-game winner since 2007. Odom is the only Bearkat freshman to ever log 10 wins and just the fifth SHSU pitcher to win 10 or more games at the Division I level.
Northwestern State led all schools with three athletes on the preseason all-conference first-team, while McNeese State placed four total players on the preseason teams. Lamar, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Central Arkansas each had three players honored, while New Orleans had two selections. Nicholls and Houston Baptist had one each.
The preseason Southland favorites, Sam Houston State, get the season underway at home with a three-game series against the seven-time College World Series participants Wichita State, starting Friday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m.
