Baseball drops two to Demons Saturday

NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State swept a Southland Conference baseball doubleheader from Sam Houston Saturday at Brown-Stroud Field, winning 1-0 and 10-8.

In the first game, Sam Houston starting pitched Andrew Godail allowed only four hits in six and two-thirds innings but took the loss. Demon hurler Adam Oller shut out the Kats, allowing only six hits.

Bearkat right fielder Travis Lee went three for four. Zach Smith, Collin Yelich and Trevor Winne each picked up one hit for Sam Houston.

In the nightcap, Northwestern State erupted for four home runs in the third inning, all clearing the left field fence, to squeeze out a two-run victory.

The wins improved Northwestern State to 11-8 on the season and more importantly, a perfect 5-0 in Southland Conference play. Sam Houston dropped to 8-11 and 3-2 in league action.

Jake MacWilliam put Sam Houston up 1-0 with a home run in the top of the third of Game two. But a quartet of Demon launched their first home runs of the season. Matthew Alford led off the frame a homer. Joel Atkinson doubled and two batters later came home on Caleb Dugas jack. Three batters later, C.J. Webster and David Fry's went back-to-back.

The Bearkats added a pair in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-3 but the Demons answered in the bottom half. A four-run top of the sixth for Sam Houston cut the margin to 8-7 and another tally in the seventh pulled the Kats within one again, 9-8. But, again Northwestern State answered to earn the win.

NSU and SHSU conclude the series on Sunday at one o'clock.  Right-hander Jeffrey Stovall (2-1, 3.00 ERA) is projected to get the start for the Demons and Sam Houston's Ryan Brinley (0-2, 7.00 ERA).
