
Home opener vs. Crusaders 3 p.m. Wednesday

A month into the 2015 season, the Sam Houston softball team finally plays a home game Tuesday when the Bearkats play host to the Crusaders from Mary Hardin-Baylor.
The pair are scheduled for a 3 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday that will open the 10th season of play at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
Mary Hardin-Baylor brings a 6-2 record into the contest. The Crusaders are led at the plate by Emily Marrs and Cori Drake who sport batting averages of .444 and .433, respectively. Three Crusader pitchers – Haley Parker (1.44), Tiffany Birdwell (2.62) and Karen Tennis (2.84) – hold earned run averages before 3.00.
Sam Houston has played a demanding schedule that included participated in major intercollegiate tournaments in San Marcos, Arlington and Mobile, Alabama, and a contest in College Station against the No. 2 ranked Oregon Ducks.
The Bearkats own a 5-11 season record that includes victories over Texas-Arlington and Buffalo and an extra inning loss to undefeated Ohio State.
The team has shown plenty of power at the plate during the first month of the season.
Sam Houston has produced 23 doubles and 17 home runs in 16 games. Shortstop Sarah Allison leads the squad with five home runs. Payton Webb has totaled four and Angelica Gonzales has put three shots out of the park.
Webb, Allison and Dani Allen lead Sam Houston with batting averages of .455, .340 and .333, respectively.
The Bearkats will begin Southland Conference action Friday and Saturday in Lake Charles, La., against defending league champion and 2015 preseason conference favorite McNeese State.
Sam Houston's scheduled 6:30 p.m. single game with Texas Southern has now been moved to Wednesday, April 29, due to the threat of bad weather on this Wednesday.
