Islanders edge Kats 2-1 for series sweep

Freshman pitcher Jordan Franks surrendered one earned run and first baseman Hillary Adams posted her 38th career home run in a 2-1 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday afternoon as the Islanders earned a Southland softball series sweep over Sam Houston.
Adams' seventh home run of the season was a shot to center field in the sixth inning. Three other long balls by the Bearkats (one by Adams and two by designated player Angelica Gonzales) were caught at the wall by Islanders outfielders.
Sam Houston loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Right fielder Sarah Allison led off with a single. Gonzales walked and shortstop Alexis Garcia reached on an error. But pinch hitter Hannah Marion was retired on called third strike and second baseman Dani Allen grounded out to third base to end the game.
The loss dropped Sam Houston to 9-24 for the year and 2-12 in league action. Franks picked up her first collegiate complete game, spreading seven hits over seven innings. The freshman's record in the circle this year is 3-5.
First baseman Lindsey Lyles put the Islanders in front with a second inning home run. Left fielder Dani Tefft led off the third inning reaching first on an error. She stole second, reach third on a second error then scored on a ground out by pitcher Liz Carter. The winning pitcher, Carter, allowed six hits and struck out four Bearkats to up her record in the circle to 9-12.
Sam Houston returns to action Wednesday as the Bearkats play host to the University of Houston at 6:30 p.m. at the Softball Complex.
