
Jenna Phillips & Heather Shake Sign With Kats

Two top women's golfers – Jenna Phillips and Heather Shake – have signed letters-of-intent to attend Sam Houston and play for head coach Brandt Kieschnick and assistant Tommy Chain.
Phillips helped lead Vandegrift High School in Austin to the Texas Class 6A state championship. She runner-up at the 2015 STPGA-Battle at the Republic with rounds of 75-74—149 this spring. She posted top 12 finishes in Legends Junior Tour events including fifth place at the 2014 George Hannon Invitational, 12th at the 2015 Jimmy Demaret Junior Golf Classic and 7th at the 2015 Legends Collegiate
“Jenna is a solid player that can put up some low scores. She has a very repeatable and powerful golf swing,” Kieschnick said. “ We look forward to having Jenna continue her good play in big events and help us win championships. Jenna is coached by former Bearkat golf alum, Matt Wernecke, and will fit in well with our program.”
Phillips was 12th in the 2014 Texas State Junior Golf Championships (73-76-72—221). She had a solid high school season at Vandegrift High School with a runner-up finish at the District 25-5A championships (79-75—154) and fourth at the Class 5A Region IV event (79-69—148). She finished 16th in the state championships.
Shake is a transfer from the University of Houston-Victoria where she finished the 2014-15 season ranked No. 5 in the NAIA national women's golf rankings.
Her freshman season, she won three individual medalist championships including the Loyola-New Orleans Invitational, the A.I.I. conference championship and the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship. Her scoring average for the season was 74.42.
“Heather has the talent to come right in and be one of the best players in the Southland Conference,” Kieschnick said. “She was won 6 times at the collegiate level and can post many rounds in the 60's. We are very fortunate to have Heather come into our program to help us win Division 1 events and Conference Championships. She is a great competitor and has the experience of post-season in collegiate golf, we feel very confident she can help us reach the NCAA Post-Season.”
Shake became the first UHV women's golf to qualify for the NAIA Women's Golf Championships was named the university's “Female Athlete of the Year” and women's golf “Player of the Year.”
Shake is a graduate of Dawson High School in Pearland.
