
Ashley Jenkins headed to NCAA in Oregon

Jenkins, who won the Southland Conference hammer championship three weeks ago, earned her spot in the championships by finishing 11th in the NCAA West Prelims competition hosted by the University of Texas at Austin at Mike A. Myers Stadium Thursday.
She tossed the hammer 202 feet, nine inches on her first attempt.
Her teammate, Adrienne Quillin missed finishing among the top 12 by a little under two feet. Quillin placed 14th with a throw of 200 feet, 11 inches.
In other competition for the Sam Houston women Ruth Amaku placed 35th in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:01.31, Paul Smith was 41st in the 100 meter dash with a clocking of 11.71 and Jordan Grady was 45th in the 400 meter dash with a mark of 55.49.
Action continues Friday and Saturday in the NCAA West Prelims.Athletes who rank among the top 48 in their respective event earn berths in the NCAA West Preliminary Round. The best 24 relay teams also advance to the prelims.
The prize at stake is a berth in the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Oregon, June 10-13.
To advance, athletes must finish among the top 12 in their event. The top 12 relay teams advance as well. To reach the quarterfinals, athletes must finish in the top 24 of the first round competition.
