Sixteen former Sam Houston State baseball players are currently playing in the professional ranks. Each week during the summer, we take a look back at how these Pro Kats fared. Below is a look at how each player is performing through July 27.
Alex Bisacca | Gulf Coast League Yankees (Rookie Ball) | New York Yankees
The Yankees' 35th-round selection made his third professional appearance on July 18, allowing just one hit while striking out two during two innings of work. The righty has yet to yield an earned run during his 3 2-3 innings of pro ball.
Logan Boyd | Lowell Spinners (Class-A Short Season) | Boston Red Sox
After a pair of rocky starts to begin his pro career, Boyd, a 19th-round selection by the Boston Red Sox in June, has allowed just one earned run over his last six innings (three appearances), surrendering eight hits and four walks while striking out 11 in that span.
Ryan Brinley | Auburn Doubledays (Class-A Short Season) | Washington Nationals
The Nationals' 27th-round pick logged three appearances over the past week, holding opponents scoreless in four innings. After making his first two professional starts with the Gulf Coast League Nationals, Brinley moved up to Auburn where he boasts a 0.87 ERA in 10 1-3 innings, allowing just one earned run while having yet to relinquish a walk.
Carter Burgess | Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A) | Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays' 2014 Round 28 selection recorded hits in four of five games last week while adding a pair of runs. In 22 games with Bowling Green, Burgess is hitting .243 with one RBI and eight walks.
Cody Dickson | Bradenton Marauders (Class-A Advanced) | Pittsburgh Pirates
The 2013 Round 4 selection by the Pirates moved his record to 9-5 – including 5-2 over his last 10 starts – with a win last Monday. In two starts over the last seven days, Dickson tossed a combined 10 2-3 innings, allowing 11 hits and five runs while striking out 12 and walking two. On the season, the lefty boasts a 4.01 ERA in 20 starts, holding opponents to a .275 average.
Tyler Eppler | Bradenton Marauders (Class-A Advanced) | Pittsburgh Pirates
The sixth-round 2014 Pirates' selection logged a pair of appearances last week, limiting opponents to five hits and two earned runs while striking out seven and not allowing a walk across five innings. Eppler (2-1) boasts a 3.86 ERA in 32 2-3 innings this season while holding a 2.93 ERA in 22 appearances, including 20 starts, during his career.
Dallas Gallant | Fort Myers Miracle (Class-A Advanced) | Minnesota Twins
The Twins' 23rd selection in 2013 tossed 2 1-3 innings of scoreless baseball on Tuesday, marking the eighth time in the last 10 games Gallant has kept opponents in check. The appearance was the 10th with Fort Myers Miracle since beginning his rehab stint (injured finger). While with the Miracle, Gallant has tossed 11 1-3 innings, allowing 10 hits and just three runs while striking out nine and walking six.
Andrew Godail | Williamsport Crosscutters (Class-A Short Season) | Philadelphia Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies 2015 26th-round selection threw 3 1-3 innings over three appearances last week. The Woodlands product allowed four hits and three earned runs during two innings on Wednesday but held opponents scoreless, surrendering just one hit across two other outings. Over 10 appearances, the lefty holds a 3.86 ERA, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs in 11 2-3 innings, striking out 11 and walking 11.
Dustin Martin | Toros de Tijuana (Triple-A Mexican League) | MLB affiliate
The 26th-round pick by the Twins in 2006 has posted tremendous success since joining the Mexican League, going 9-for-22 at the plate over five games, scoring six runs and driving in four last week including a 3-for-4 performance on Sunday. Martin hit .310 in 18 games (22-for-71) for the Tigres de Quintana Roo and is off to a fast start with the Toros, hitting .438 (14-for-32) including 11 runs and seven RBIs.
Ryan O'Hearn | Wilmington Blue Rocks (Class-A Advanced) | Kansas City Royals
After raking in a South Atlantic League-leading 19 home runs and 56 RBIs with the Lexington Legends, O'Hearn was promoted to Wilmington. The 2014 eighth-round pick by the Royals posted a pair of two hit games and is 6-for-18 at the plate over his last five games.
Nolan Riggs | Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Class-A Short Season) | San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants pick up from a season ago made one appearance last week, tossing four innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs while walking one and fanning four on Tuesday. Despite the struggle, Riggs boasts a 2.25 ERA in seven outings, striking out 24 hitters to just nine walks in 28 innings pitched.
Matt Shelton | Great Lakes Loons (Class-A) | Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers' 2011 24th-round pick struggled in two appearances last week, allowing 14 hits in a combined nine innings pitched, including 13 runs and nine walks while striking out seven. Shelton owns a 3.60 ERA for his career.
Caleb Smith | Trenton Thunder (Double-A) | New York Yankees
The 14th-round 2013 Yankees' selection was masterful on Friday, allowing just two hits and one earned run in seven innings while fanning three and walking one. The lefty is 8-5 with a 3.91 ERA on the season including 6-2 with a 3.26 ERA over his last 10 starts.
Ryan Tepera | Toronto Blue Jays
The reliable Blue Jays reliever made three appearances on the road last week, allowing just one hit while shutting out Oakland and Seattle over three innings. In 20 games with Toronto, the righty holds a 2.38 ERA while maintaining a 16-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Corey Toups | Lexington Legends (Class-A) | Kansas City Royals
The Royals' 15th-round selection extended his hit streak to five games, going 7-for-16 at the plate in that time. In July, Toups is hitting .402 (35-for-87) with seven doubles and two home runs in 21 games. The Woodlands product ranks first in South Atlantic League in runs (65), sixth in stolen bases (27), ninth in batting average (.301) and 10th in total bases (142).
Collin Yelich | Gulf Coast League Braves (Rookie Ball) | Atlanta Braves
The Braves' 29th-round selection has made 17 appearances, including 11 starts behind the plate, hitting .227 (10-for-44) in that timespan. The backstop logged a pair of hits, going 2-for-8 last week.
