Box Score Jordyn Vaughn led Sam Houston with 10 kills and Shelby Vas Matt totaled 12 as Texas State handed the Bearkats a 26-24 25-23 25-17 non-conference volleyball loss Tuesday at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville.
A crowd of 1,626 saw an exciting match that was tied 19 times during the three sets. During the break between the second and third sets, fans also received a special presentation the disease Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) on “CMT Night” at Bearkat volleyball. Proceeds from the event have raised more than $12,000 for CMT research. Head coach Brenda Gray's grandson Boston has CMT and was recognized at halftime.
Each set was a roller-coaster ride with eight ties and two lead changes in the first, seven ties and five lead changes in the second and four ties in the final set.
Sam Houston held a 24-21 lead in the first set after a kill by Taylor Cunningham. But Matt Shelby and Morgan Lewis each picked up kills and the Kats added two errors as the Bobcats escaped with by a 26-24 margin.
The Bearkats held a 21-20 lead on another kill Cunningham in the second set. Again Texas State finished strong with a 5-2 run for a 25-23 set victory.
In the final set, the Kats led briefly 5-4 and were tied 12-12 when the visitors from San Marcos started a 13-5 run to close out the match.
Cunningham and Brooke White each totaled nine kills for Sam Houston. Michelle Griffith assisted on 29 of the Bearkats' 34 kills. Libero Claire Kilpatrick led the SHSU defense with 17 digs. White was responsible for 12 digs.
Sam Houston falls to 5-6 for the loss. The Bearkats travel to the College of Charleston tournament this weekend in Sam Houston's final non-conference action of the fall. Texas State upped its 2015 record to 5-7.
