After a strong start to the fall tournament schedule two weeks ago, the Sam Houston women's tennis team faces a challenging field Friday through Sunday at the Rice Invitational.
The tournament is being held at the George R. Brown Tennis Center in Houston. The Bearkats will take on squads from Houston, New Mexico State, Rice, Texas-Arlington, Texas State, UTSA and Texas.
The event is a flighted tournament with four singles flights and two doubles flights. Individual championships and consolation play will be held for each flight.
Two weeks ago, the Bearkats chalked up 34 victories in 48 singles and doubles matches over the weekend at the Tyler Tennis Classic hosted by Tyler Junior College.
This weekend at Rice Fabiene Gettwart will play in the number one singles, Ema Barkovic and Carrie Casey will compete in the number two singles, Mila Milanovic and Maddie Mortimore will represent the Bearkats at number three and Caitlyn Mitchell and Bailey VanDyke will compete in the four singles.
“Two weeks ago, for the first tournament of the fall and the amount of matches the girls played, our team gave everything they had,” head coach Jim Giachino said. “We have a lot of talent on the team but we still need to improve in a few areas. We face much tougher opponents this week, something that can only help us.”
