Kats improve against stiff competition at Rice

Sam Houston picked up seven singles victories and four doubles wins against a strong field at the Rice Invitational at the George R. Brown Tennis Center in Houston this weekend.
Teams from the University of Houston, Baylor, Texas State, Texas, New Mexico State, UTSA and Rice participated in the event along with the Bearkats.
“This weekend's competition was a definite level up from the Tyler tournament two weeks ago,” assistant coach Olivia Battye said. “I think the name on the shirt of the opposition affected the team mentally on the first day Friday. But Saturday was huge improvement.”
Senior Maddie Mortimore accounted for four victories with two in singles and two teaming with Bailey VanDyke in doubles.
“Once the level of competitiveness rose, the girls were right in the matches, believing they could win,” Battye said. “We have a week and a half to improve the technical glitches before the next tournament at Northwestern State.”
Sunday's final day of singles was rained out.
