
Bowlers go 4-1 on first day in Arkansas

Sam Houston won four of its five matches on the opening day of the Mid-Winter Invitational hosted by Arkansas State Friday in Jonesboro. The Bearkats rank third in total pins after team baker with a 5,113 pin fall.
The Bearkats defeated the Central Missouri Mules 975 – 968, Wisconsin-Whitewater 1,065 – 888, Jackson State 1,076 – 951 and Alabama State 986 – 815. The team's only loss was to McKendree 1,073 – 1,011.
Sam Houston and UCM both are tied for fourth in the national rankings. Wisconsin-Whitewater is No. 6 and McKendree is No. 9
McKendree stands in first place in total pins with 5,183. Host Arkansas State is in second with 5,144 followed by Sam Houston 5,113, Nebraska 4,900 and Central Missouri 4,858.
No team went without a loss Friday. Sam Houston, Arkansas State, Nebraska, Vanderbilt and Stephen F. Austin all finished the day at 4-1.
Saturday in traditional team play, the Bearkats will take on Lincoln University, Nebraska, Stephen F. Austin, Arkansas State and Vanderbilt.
Total pins from the first two days will decide the seeding for Sunday's best of seven bracket play.
The tournament is the first of the spring semester schedule for each of the 14 teams in the field. The event, which is being held at the Jonesboro Bowling Center, features 10 nationally rank squads including each of the top six squads.
Sam Houston's 2015-16 dual match record now stands at 52-22.
