HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston women's bowling team will open the 2016 season ranked as the No. 6 team in the country as the NTCA preseason poll was released Tuesday.
Last season the Bearkats advanced to the national championships for the fifth time in the program's six seasons. They closed out the 2016 season as the No. 6 team as well.
“Every year the preseason poll is always interesting,” said head coach Brad Hagen. “At the end of the day it's an opinion poll. Whether we are first or last, we have a job to do and that's win as much as possible to position ourselves for the postseason.”
The Bearkats return five bowlers from last season's team that tied the program record with 102 wins, including All-Americans Janine Kuwahara and Heather Penatzer.
“The great thing about this team this year is there is a great mix of returnees, talent and leaders,” Hagen said. They're working hard on and off the lanes and the hope is it will show quickly with our crazy October schedule.”
The Kats will open the season this weekend at the Midstates Invitational in Wichita, Kansas. It is the first of four events for the Bearkat bowlers this month.
