PEARLAND, Texas – The Sam Houston State men's golf program hosts the second-annual two-day 2016 Bayou City Collegiate Classic in conjunction with Houston and Rice beginning Monday at Pearland's Golfcrest Country Club.
The 54-hole tournament tees off with 36 holes on Monday from the par-72, 7,254-yard course. The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday. The 14-team field features Houston, Rice, Sam Houston, Abilene Christian, Charleston Southern, HBU, Kansas, Lamar, Little Rock, McNeese, Texas State UT Arlington and UTSA.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bearkats had a 10-stroke improvement on the final afternoon at the Hartford Hawk Invitational, finishing in fourth place in the 16-team event. The two-day event, which took place Sept. 19-20 in South Kent, Conn., was shortened to just 36 holes. The Bearkats fired a team score of 280, the second-best team round of the day, but managed to just gain two strokes on Cal Poly who won the event.
Jake McCrory earned another top 10 finish, shooting a 2-under, 70 on Tuesday and finished in third overall. The junior from Deer Park finished three strokes off the lead.
Andrew Ertel also cracked into the top 10 with a 69 on Tuesday, moving him up to 7th overall for the tournament. The low round of the day for the Kats was shot by Mason Weld, who had a 68, moving him from 64th place heading into the day to a tie for 22nd.
BUILDING ON LAST YEAR
A season ago, Sam Houston took ninth at the inaugural Bayou City Collegiate Classic at 37-over, 901. Mason Weld (79-73-73), who moved on five spots on the final day, and Andrew Ertel (80-71-74) each captured a tie for 38th among the field of 81 competitors at 9-over, 225. Houston secured the team title at 6-over, 870.
