Sam Houston welcomes back four players who finished the 2016 ranked in five top-20 statistical categories. Offensively, Andrew Fregia finished 11th nationally with seven triples and Bryce Johnson was 20th with 90 base hits.
AN ELITE HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
Sam Houston welcomed crowds of 1,000-plus 15 times a season ago and averaged more than 1,100 spectators per game. The fan support carried Sam Houston to 10 straight home wins to close out the regular season as well as victories in 19 of its final 20 games at Don Sanders Stadium.
Since opening its gates on Feb. 11, 2006, Sam Houston has posted a 216-111 (.660) mark at Don Sanders Stadium. The $5.5 million facility has seen significant upgrades in the past few seasons including the installation of a top-of-the-line $300,000 video board prior to the 2014 season and a $1.4 million AstroTurf playing surface for 2016.
QUOTABLES
Head coach Matt Deggs on the number of home games…
“We compiled a schedule that includes 34 home games, which is the most this program has seen in a while. We have an absolutely great environment. We will put a 1,000-plus each night which is a huge advantage for us and was a big reason we won 22 games at home a season ago.”
Head coach Matt Deggs on the formidable schedule…
“Jay Sirianni does a great job putting our schedule together. It's one of the benefits to being located where we are and having the facilities we do. We are able to draw some top-25 caliber schools. It's a big factor in what we're trying to do in achieving a top-40 RPI. You have to be willing to playing anyone, anywhere, anytime.”
