HERO Sports Sophomore All-American Team
HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Following Nathan Stewart's naming to the HERO Sports Freshman All-America team, teammates Davion Davis and Justin Johnson were each named to HERO Sports Sophomore All-America team on Thursday.
Davis was a first team selection after earning second team all-Southland Conference honors in 2016. The wide receiver from Hutto, Texas, hauled in 56 passes for 960 yards and 10 touchdowns in his sophomore campaign as a part of one of the nation's most prolific offenses.
He had four games with over 100 yards receiving and caught at least one touchdown in seven games. His biggest game came at home against Texas Southern when he reeled in six catches for 184 yards and three scores, the first of four games this season a Bearkat wide receiver had at least three scores in a single game.
His 960 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns were third in the Southland behind only teammates Stewart and Yedidiah Louis, while his 56 catches were third among league players.
A big-play threat throughout the season, he was on the receiving end of each of Sam Houston's longest two plays from scrimmage in 2016, catching touchdown passes of 80 yards at Incarnate Word and 79 against Texas Southern.
Meanwhile, Johnson earned honorable mention all-sophomore honors from HERO Sports after being a first-team all-Southland choice at linebacker in his first year with the Kats. The transfer from Blinn College finished sixth in the SLC with 97 total tackles for the season, while his 7.5 per-game average was 12th best among all Southland players.
He finished with 4.5 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks on the season, also picking off a pass and returning it 26 yards for a touchdown in the regular-season finale against Central Arkansas to help clinch the Southland crown.
Johnson turned in a pair of games with at least 12 tackles, picking up a dozen at Lamar before going for 17 stops at Incarnate Word which tied him for the 11th most in a single-game in Bearkat history.
