
Bowlers 8-3 in SFA tournament in Houston

Anna Groce and Heather Penatzer finished ninth and 13th, respectively, in the traditional team matches individual standings Saturday to lead the Bearkats to three victories at the SFA Lumberjack Classic in Houston.
Groce posted a pin fall average of 209.33 and Penatzer averaged 207.33 Saturday. Their performances helped pace the Bearkats to a 1,064 to 960 victory over No. 1 Arkansas state and wins over Prairie View A&M and Jackson State by scores of 923 to 820 and 1,032 to 893, respectively.
Sam Houston stands 8-3 in dual match play at the tournament falling in their final two matches of the day to North Carolina A&T 1,095 to 1,034 and Tulane 1,000 to 948.
Penatzer's high games included 235 in the victory over Arkansas State and 233 in the loss to North Carolina A&T. Groce posted a 222 game in the North Carolina A&T match.
Sam Houston will be the number six seed going into Sunday's best of seven baker bracket play. The Kats own a 198.0 team average. North Carolina A&T is the one seed and defending NCAA champion Nebraska is the two seed. The Cornhuskers own the best overall record in the event, going 10-1 so far.
“Overall it was not a bad day today,” Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. “We had some tough pairs towards the end Saturday.”
Sam Houston won five of its six matches on the first day of the SFA Lumberjack Classic Friday. Two of the victories came over nationally-ranked opponents and the other three came over Southwestern Athletic Conference foes.
The tournament is being held at the Lanes Off Belaire located at 4191 Bellaire Blvd. in Houston.
Sam Houston's only loss came to defending NCAA champion and No. 2 ranked Nebraska as the Cornhuskers posted a pin fall total of 1,067 to the Kats' 903.
The Kats opened the day's total pin baker play with a 1,035 to 846 victory over No. 14 LIU-Brooklyn. Sam Houston followed up with a 1,019 – 787 win over Texas Southern, a 1,002 – 608 victory versus Grambling and a 958 – 819 defeat of Southern.
