
Bowlers fifth at SFA Lumberjack Event

Sam Houston defeated No. 3 ranked Vanderbilt and No. 19 Tulane in best-of-seven baker bracket play Sunday to take fifth place in the SFA Lumberjack Women's Bowling Classic in Houston.
The Bearkats defeated Tulane in the opening round Sunday in a battle that went seven games. Sam Houston won 242 – 164, 220 – 220, 177 – 179, 268 – 237, 200 – 190, 200 – 220, 236 -193.
The Sam bowlers took No. 1 ranked Arkansas State to six games in their second match, falling 247 – 196, 266 – 232, 203 – 232, 217 – 197, 212 – 232, 245 – 207. The Bearkats bounced back for a seven game victory over Vanderbilt 195 – 205, 190 – 182, 227 – 177, 203 – 237, 170 – 231, 192 – 236, 236 – 197.
No. 11 North Carolina A&T won the tournament championship, defeating No. 7 Fairleigh Dickinson in seven games in the finals. No. 2 Nebraska defeated Arkansas State in five games to take third place.
Sam Houston compiled a 10-4 record during the weekend and ended the tournament ranked fifth in total pins with a 202.4 average. The performance ups the Bearkats' season dual match record to 74-34.
“Sunday was huge for us with a good win over Tulane and maintaining our head-to-head advantage over Vanderbilt,” Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. “Today was a much needed high quality Sunday finish for us as we move forward.”
Saturday, Anna Groce and Heather Penatzer finished ninth and 13th, respectively, in the traditional team matches individual standings Saturday to lead the Bearkats to three victories at the SFA Lumberjack Classic in Houston.
Groce posted a pin fall average of 209.33 and Penatzer averaged 207.33 Saturday. Their performances helped pace the Bearkats to a victory over No. 1 Arkansas State and wins over Prairie View A&M and Jackson State.
Sam Houston won five of its six matches on the first day of the SFA Lumberjack Classic Friday. Two of the victories came over nationally ranked teams and the other three came over Southwestern Athletic Conference foes.
