
Sarah Black, Bearkats surge through Day 1

Sam Houston State women's golfer Sarah Black fired a 1-under, 141 and Heather Shake shot a 2-over, 144 through the opening two rounds, good enough for second and a fourth-place tie while the Bearkats sit favorably in second (14-over, 582), just four shots back of leader Middle Tennessee State.
Black is just one of two golfers to shoot under-par during the opening 36 holes. The sophomore is three strokes back of UTSA's Julie Houston, who competing individually leads at 4-under, 138.
Meanwhile, Shake followed up an opening round 75 with a second-round 69, tied for the second lowest round of the tournament. The day one score places the Kats in their best position through two rounds since leading the ORU Shootout by four strokes, an event they held on to win by two.
Teammate Celeste Lo rebounded from an opening round 78 to shoot 72 and finish 8-over, 150, in a tie for 26th. Nicole Budnik (73-79 – 152) is 10-over in a tie for 36th and Jenna Phillips (80-74 – 154) sits 12-over in a tie for 40th among 78 competitors.
Sam Houston sits four strokes up on third-place UTSA (18-over, 586). Long Beach State (19-over, 587) and Little Rock (20-over, 588) round out the top five.
