Taking on Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, the Sam Houston women's tennis team begins Southland Conference action this weekend at the McAdams Tennis Center.
Both matches have an 11 a.m. first serve start time.
The Bearkats are off to their best start since 2012, having won five of their eight non-conference matches. The Sam Houston women split on a road trip to Arlington last weekend, defeating Missouri State 6-1 and falling to UT-Arlington 5-2.
Sam Houston's other victories have come over LSU-Alexandria, Prairie View A&M, Montana State and South Dakota State.
Southeastern Louisiana brings a 3-3 won-loss mark to Huntsville Saturday. The Lions own a pair of victories over Alcorn State and one win over Southern. Their losses came at the hands of Louisiana-Lafayette, Southern Mississippi and South Alabama.
New Orleans is 4-1 this season. The Privateers have defeated Loyola, Southern, Jackson State and Alcorn State. Their lone loss was a 7-0 blanking by LSU.
“We continued to grow as a team every match so far this season,” Sam Houston head coach Jim Giachino said. “We're still a work in progress but the team is becoming more confident in their abilities every time out. We're excited about getting to start conference play at home this weekend.”
The Sam Houston women have combined for a 32-16 overall record in dual match singles play this season. Maddie Mortimore is 7-1 playing mostly in the number five position. Ema Barkovic, Carrie Casey, Fabienne Gettwart and Mila Milanovic also have posted 5-3 singles records. Caitlyn Mitchell stands 3-3. Khee Yen Wee won both her matches last week in her debut as a Bearkat.
Following this weekend's action, Sam Houston plays its next two Southland matches on the road at Nicholls on Friday March 4 and McNeese State on Saturday March 5.
