
Bowlers go 8-1 after day two in New Jersey

The No. 4 ranked Sam Houston women's bowling team has won eight of its nine matches going into the final day of the Hawk Flight Classic in North Brunswick, New Jersey.
The Kats defeated New Jersey City 1025 to 629, Franklin Pierce 946 to 937, No. 15 Kutztown 1,129 to 953 and No. 16 Monmouth 1,045 to 988 in traditional team play Saturrday. Sam Houston's only loss came at the hands of No. 14 LIU-Brooklyn 1,069 to 970.
With one more traditional team match to play Sunday morning, the Bearkats and No. 3 Vanderbilt both stand at the top of the event, both with 8-1 records. Vanderbilt and Sam Houston will battle in traditional team action Sunday morning before best-of-seven bracket action starts.
Vanderbilt leads the tournament in total pins with a 217.9 average. Monmouth, 7-3 in the event, is second in team pinfall with a 210.8 mark. The Bearkats' 208.7 average stands third.
Randi Speiler ranks as the tournament's second-leading bowler in traditional team action with a 223.6 average. Heather Penatzer ranks ninth with a 211.20 mean and Anne Groce is 14th with a 204.20 average.
Friday the Sam women won all four of their team baker matches.
The Kats defeated Franklin Pierce 1,147 to 924, No. 19 Saint Francis College 1,006 to 986, No. 9 Fairleigh Dickinson 942 to 798 and Caldwell 1,180 to 980.
Sam Houston's 1,147 pins in Friday's opening victory was a school record for a five-game baker set.
The Bearkats upped their season dual match record to 82-35 with the two day's performances.
Following the trip to New Jersey, the Kats have only two more tournaments remaining on their regular season schedule. Sam Houston will travel to Smyra, Tennessee, March 18-20 for the Music City Classic and New Orleans, La. For the Southland Bowling Conference championship March 25-26.
