Your support makes our success possible
Sixteen talented student-athletes including 12 high school seniors and four transfers signed letters-of-intent to attend Sam Houston and play football for Bearkat head coach K. C. Keeler.
The group includes a mix of eight offensive and eight defensive players. The Bearkats signed three wide receivers, two offensive linemen, a running back and two quarterbacks along with four defensive backs, two linebackers and two defensive linemen.
“In my 30 years of coaching, this has been our most challenging recruiting class,” Keeler said. “Going all the way into December in the playoffs and then down three coaches and having three new FBS head coaches in Texas after our players has made it a challenge. There was a lot of time we had to play catch-up. It was a challenge to keep this class intact. We did a phenomenal job. But the end result of the hard work has been one of our best signing classes ever.
“Each one of these young men brings something special to the program. We're excited to have them join the Bearkat family. Ten of our 12 high school signees were team captains. That shows you the kind of leadership they have. The great thing about recruiting athletes from Texas is they want to stay in the state."
Since 2011, Sam Houston has compiled a record of 56 victories and only 19 losses. The 56 wins are the most by any NCAA Division I program in Texas. The Bearkats are one of only three teams in the nation to earn berths in the NCAA Division I Football Championship playoffs each of the past five years. Sam Houston has won three Southland Conference championships in that time span.
"One of the great things about recruiting to Sam Houston is the support we get from the administration and the faculty," Keeler said. "It's truly a team effort when you have your university president (Dr. Dana G. Hoyt), Deans, professors come each weekend to visit with the recruits, that's impressive. We have a winning program and this is an outstanding educational institution. That's big selling point."
