Box Score A solo home run to right field by designated player Breanna Homer was the offensive highlight for Sam Houston in a 10-1 run-rule loss to McNeese State Friday night.
The contest opened 2016 Southland Conference action for both teams. The Cowgirls showed why they were the number two pick of the league's head coaches in the annual preseason softball poll. McNeese upped its record to 14-5 with nine hits include a pair of doubles, a triple and two home runs.
Cowgirl pitcher Emily Vincent limited the Kats to two hits in six innings. She struck out 10 batters. Homer's home run (her first of the year) and a single off the center field wall by catcher Katie Doerre accounted for the Kats' hits.
Six McNeese players batted in runs with third baseman Erika Piancastelli and designated players Morgan Catron picking up home runs.
Lindsey McLeod (3-3) took the loss in the circle, starting and facing 24 points. She struck out three Cowgirls.
Sam Houston and McNeese will complete the conference series with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. at the Softball Complex.
