Kats go unbeaten on SLC first day

Third-seeded Sam Houston went undefeatted Friday to advance to the 2016 Southland Bowling League Championship final round Saturday.
Top-seeded Arkansas State and No. 2 Vanderbilt remain in contention for the league title, meeting in the back draw Saturday morning.
In the opening round of the championship, Arkansas State earned a 4-2 match victory over eighth-seeded Louisiana Tech as fourth-seeded Stephen F. Austin topped No. 5 Monmouth, 4-3. Sam Houston the was 4.5-.5 match winner over No. 6 Tulane, while second-seeded Vanderbilt defeated No. 7 Valparaiso in a 3.5-3.5 roll-off.
Tulane opened the second round of competition with a sweep over Valparaiso to advance the Green Wave as the Crusaders were eliminated. The Bearkats defeated Vanderbilt 4-1 to advance Sam Houston State while the Commodores dropped to the loser bracket. Arkansas State and Stephen F. Austin battled in the second round after 4-3 final as the Red Wolves advanced. The Ladyjacks drop to the loser bracket to face Tulane. Monmouth toped the Lady Techsters 4-3 to eliminate Louisiana Tech.
Stephen F. Austin swept Tulane in Match 9 to eliminate the Green Wave. The Ladyjacks advance with the win. Vanderbilt defeated Monmouth as the Commodores advanced to face SFA.
Sam Houston State defeated top-seeded Arkansas State 4-1 to guarantee itself a spot in the championship round. Vanderbilt defeated Stephen F. Austin and will take on ASU to open play Saturday.
"Despite some illnesses among our team, the squad really proved today that we are talented, deep in quality and a team that can contend daily," Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. "We're excited and proud that these ladies stayed focused and making quality shots."
The championship will conclude tomorrow with the final round of the back draw beginning at 9:35 a.m. featuring top-seed Arkansas State and second-seeded Vanderbilt. The championship round will begin at 11:05 a.m. with No. 3 Sam Houston State facing the winner of the final back draw match.
All matches will continue to be played as best-of-seven Bakers.
