Texas Southern Visits Tuesday

After a strong showing against the defending Southland Conference champion Northwestern State Demons, the Sam Houston softball team returns to action Tuesday when the Bearkats play host to Texas Southern in a 6:30 p.m. single game at the Softball Complex.
The event marks the fourth contest in a nine-game home stand currently underway. The Kats host Louisiana-Monroe in a 3 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday then open a Southland Conference weekend series with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Southeastern Louisiana on Friday.
Texas Southern is the defending Southwestern Athletic Conference softball champion. The Tigers are off to a 4-1 start in the SWAC and stand 11-11 for the year.
“Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M are two Southwestern Athletic Conference programs that have really made strides during the past several seasons,” Sam Houston head coach Bob Brock. “We're going to have to bring our A game against them.”
Sam Houston opened their series against the Demons Friday with a 5-4 victory, earning Brock his 1,100th victory as a head coach in his 32-year career at Sam Houston, Texas A&M and Baylor.
The Kats have shown their offensive powers in recent games. Sam Houston totaled 12 runs in 12 innings in a doubleheader against the Houston Cougars last week and scored 15 runs during the Northwestern State series.
Catcher Katie Doerre leads the squad with a .393 average that includes 15 RBIs and five home runs. Infielders Dani Allen (.380) and Breanna Homer (.325) have come on strong lately as wel. Homer leads the team with 18 RBIs and has five doubles, a triple and four home runs to her credit.
Taylor Atkinson, Lindsey McLeod and Jordan Franks have seen the most action in the circle for the Bearkats. The three have combined for 91 strike outs.
Krystalani Yockman leads the Tigers with a .348 batting average and 13 runs batted in. Tyra Williams owns a 5-2 record in the circle for Texas Southern.
