HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State's Camry Grigsby posted a record-setting weekend at the Victor Lopez Classic. On Wednesday, she reaped the rewards for a pair of first-place collegiate finishes.
Grigsby was named Southland Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week behind a school-record result in 800-meter dash (2:09.74) and a second-place overall mark as the second leg of the 4x400-meter relay (3:42.98), the league office announced.
“Any time you go out and PR as well as win all in the same first outdoor 800, it shows some good things,” head coach David Self said. “She came back and ran a really good leg on the 4x400 as well. That speaks to how well Camry is performing this year.”
The sophomore's 800 meters time ranks at the top spot in the Southland and is 32nd nationally, while the 4x400-meter relay mark is also a league best and checks in at 35th in the country. Grigsby is the reigning league champion in both events, helping the Kats to the indoor title 2 ½ months ago.
“Any time you have a young lady such as Camry, who is just a sophomore, and is a pleasure to be around and is that successful, you see the future of the team,” Self said. “She still has two full years left. To have a bunch of athletes like her that are young and doing well, it really speaks for what we'll do as a team in the future.”
Over the weekend, Sam Houston broke four school records at Rice's Victor Lopez Classic including Olivia Olguin in the 5,000 meters (17:30.13), McCall in the 800 meters (2:09.76) and Jeffrey Moore in the 800 meters (1:49.26). As a result, the Kats came away pleased with their performance.
“We love going down there because it seems like we always have a good meet there,” Self said. “There's just something about going down with a relaxed setting and easy drive. We got great weather, which we haven't had during the outdoor season. The first part of any season you're still training.”
For Grigbsy, the accolade is yet another for an athlete less than two full years into the program. In that span, the DeSoto product has captured 10 first-place finishes, including a pair in just three races thus far this outdoor season.
“She had a great freshman year,” Self said. “She medaled in both meets. She really came back this year with a purpose. She got really serious about her fitness and nutrition. She is extremely fit in terms of body composition and she took the summer very serious.”
The Bearkats begin competition at the 89th Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Wednesday where Grigsby will run the 4x400-meter dash and anchor the squad's sprint medley relay. The four-day event will run through Saturday with the Longhorn Network set to televise the event.
