Left fielder Jennie Kieval blasted an RBI triple to left center to pull Sam Houston to within a run but the Bearkats fell short as they lost to Seton Hall 4-2 in the team's final game at the Under Armour Classic hosted by South Florida in Clearwater, Fla.
Pirates pitcher Madison Strunk spread six Bearkat hits over seven inning, striking out seven batters to pick up the victory in the circle.
Shortstop Ashley Goetz went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Sam Houston. Designated player Katie Doerre started Sam Houston's two-run fourth inning with a single to left field. Goetz followed with a single. Doerre scored on a sacrifice fly by Codi Carpenter. Goetz scored on the triple by Kieval.
Lindsey McLeod struck out five Seton Hall batters and walked only two.
Sam Houston now stands 5-12 for the season. The Bearkats will play host to Texas A&M Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Bearkat Softball Complex. The team opens Southland Conference play next weekend against the McNeese State Cowgirls.
