EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- In the short history of Sam Houston State women's bowling, there have been no shortage of NCAA All-Americans to bowl for head coach Brad Hagen. Wednesday night the list grew by two.
Janine Kuwahara and Heather Penatzer were named to the National Ten Pin Coaches Association All-America team at the annual awards dinner and banquet.
“Janine and Heather have both had two very good years and are a big reason why we are back in the national championships,” Hagen said. “It takes and entire team to get where we are, but those two have contributed some big shots at important times this year for us.”
Kuwahara, who earned her second All-America recognition, was named to the NTCA second team while Penatzer became the fifth Bearkat All-American with her third-team honor.
Kuwahara leads the Bearkats this season with a 204.3 average, helping guide SHSU to its fourth straight trip to the NCAA Championship. That includes averages of 224.8 at the TRACK Kat Klash and 221.6 at the Arkansas State event. Twice this year she was named to the all-tournament team.
Penatzer ranks second on the team with a 202.24 average in traditional team action. She posted top averages of 220.6 at Arkansas State and 216 at FDU. She also earned a pair of all-tournament team recognitions this year.
The NCAA Championship will get underway on Thursday at Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick, New Jersey.
