Mortimore Named MVP at Night of Champions

Maddie Mortimore from the Bearkat women's tennis team was one of seven spring sports student-athletes were recognized as their team's “Most Valuable Players” during Sam Houston's fourth annual “Night of Champions” celebration Sunday night at the James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center.
Mortimore, a senior from Farnham, Surrey in England, was a second team All-Southland Conference performer. She completed her four-year career with 63 singles victories, the third highest total in SHSU women's tennis history.
Andrew Ertel (men's golf) and Heather Shake (women's golf) were this spring's Most Valuable Players.
Ertel, a junior from The Woodlands, earned first team All-Southland Conference honors, was the runner-up at the 2016 Southland tournament and posted four top 25 individual finishes in the Kats' regular season tournament play.
Shake, a transfer from Victoria, was a first team All-Southland honoree and was named as the league's “Newcomer of the Year” after finishing fourth in the 2016 Southland championships.
Four of the award recipients were honored for their accomplishments during the 2015 season since the baseball, softball and women's and men's outdoor track and field seasons still are on-going. The other three honors came for accomplishments this spring.
Andrew Godail (baseball), Sarah Allison Johnson (softball), Justin Jenkins (men's outdoor track and field) and Paula Smith (women's outdoor track and field) were the 2015 award winners.
Godail, a senior pitcher from The Woodlands, posted a 2.30 earned run average for the Bearkat baseball team that reached the championship finals of the 2015 Southland Conference tournament in Sugar Land.
Allison, a senior from Lamar High School in Houston, started all 47 games for the 2015 softball team at shortstop and in the outfield. She completed her career as the Kats' second all-time home run leader with 31 in her career.
Jenkins, a Dickinson High School product, was the Southland champion in the 100 meter dash and the 4x100 relay and runner-up in the 200 meters at the 2015 outdoor meet.
Smith, a Waco Connally product), ran the anchor leg on the Bearkats' 2015 4x400 meter championship relay and was runner-up in the 200 meters for the 2015 Bearkat outdoor squad.
