Seven SHSU soccer players receive diplomas

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State soccer program posted strong results on the field. In the classroom, the results were equally as impressive.
The Bearkats had seven players receive their diplomas over the weekend including Ashley Alonzo, Katie Bunch, Colby Glover, Katie Ferrara, Joanna Nigro, Alexis Riggs, Mariah Titus. The 10-member class also saw Kylie Hambleton, Shelby McDaniel and Magen Ross graduate in December.
“We're very proud of that class coming through and graduating," head coach Tom Brown said. "Our focus in bringing these players in is not only winning games but to make sure they get their degrees. We're very happy with what they've done over the last four years.”
The team maintained at least a 3.2 GPA over each semester the last four years including Bunch who posted a 4.0 GPA this semester and finished with a 3.92 GPA overall.
“I think they really came in and changed things from where the team was as freshmen to when they left," Brown said. "They saw a ton of playing time and made a different in success in the program. They continued to build a culture of making sure they were taking care of their classroom work and working toward their degree.”
A season ago, the program notched its first 10-win campaign in team history, advancing to the Southland Conference Championship game in Conway, Ark., before falling in penalty kicks to Southeastern Louisiana. The title-game appearance was the first in 10 years.
