Trio Named All-Southland Conference

After leading a mid-season turnaround that saw Sam Houston win 11 of their last 18 league games and earn a post-season tournament berth, three Bearkats have been honored as 2016 All-Southland Conference team members.
Third baseman Breanna Homer, catcher Katie Doerre and outfielder Dani Allen were voted respectively as first team, third team and honorable mention all-league selections the Southland Conference announced Monday.
Homer, a junior from LaGrange, joined the Bearkats this spring as a third baseman after playing the last three years for the Bearkat volleyball squad. Doerre, a senior from Tomball, has been the Kats' starting catcher after transferring from Texas State. Allen, a senior from Houston / Lamar, earns All-Southland honors for the second year in a row as a four-year letter winner.
Homer has been the Sam Houston softball team's top power hitter the spring, with 10 doubles, three triples and nine home runs among her 56 total hits in 52 games. Homer has 19 multiple hit performances this year. She leads the Bearkats with a .635 slugging percentage and is second on the squad with a .359 batting average.
Doerre is the Bearkats' third-leading leader this season with a .320 average that includes nine doubles, a triple and five home runs. She has eight multiple hit games to her credit. Defensively as a catcher she has totaled 132 put outs.
Allen led the Sam Houston women in hitting for the second year in a row with a .377 average this season. She has 60 hits in 159 at bats with 10 doubles, a triple and two home runs. With a .407 on base percentage, she has scored 40 runs as a senior.
Sam Houston begins play at the 2016 Southland Conference softball tournament in Lake Charles, La. , Wednesday. The No. 6 seeded Bearkats take on No. 3 seed Lamar in the event's opening game at 11 a.m.
