Softball announced fall, spring schedules

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State softball program will play eight fall exhibitions before opening up the regular season at the Louisiana-Monroe Tournament on Feb. 10, one of three tournaments, head coach Bob Brock announced Monday.

"I really like our new schedule this year," Brock said. "We're getting a chance in all of them. I think we'll really do well in some of the early tournaments and that will really propell us into conference. I am confident that with all the new players we're going to do well."

The Bearkats will play five games at ULM Feb. 10-12 before visiting Texas A&M on March 15. Sam Houston opens home play on Feb. 22 with doubleheader action against UTSA beginning at 3 p.m. from the Bearkat Softball Complex.

Sam Houston will sandwich a home non-conference doubleheader against Prairie View A&M on March 1 between trips to Louisiana Tech and Houston for a pair of weekend tournaments. The Kats host Texas A&M on March 8 at 6:30 p.m. prior to opening Southland Conference action.

While in Houston, the Kats take on Wisconsin and Houston on March 3. One day later, Princeton and Louisiana-Monroe will be the opponents before closing out the tournament on March 5 against the host Cougars.

"I think these tournaments will feature teams that will help us get ready for conference," Brock said. "They're all good enough and strong enough. They are teams we have played against before like Louisiana-Monroe. I am pretty happy with our schedule."

After spending the opening two weekends of league action paying visits to Incarnate Word and McNeese, the squad hosts Central Arkansas for three games March 24-25 and rival Stephen F. Austin from March 31-April 1.

Other home league conference games include Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (April 14-15) and Abilene Christian (April 21-22). Sam Houston also welcomes Texas Southern on March 15 (6:30 p.m.) and visits Big 12-power Baylor on March 21 (6:30 p.m.) among notable non-conference games.

Sam Houston closes out the season with trips to Southeastern Louisiana, April 28-29, and Houston Baptist, May 5-6, before seeking a fifth trip in six years to the Southland Conference Tournament, held May 10-12 in Conway, Ark.

"We've got three or four freshmen that will really impact us and have a chance to win a position," Brock said. "They'll have to win it but we are really excited about that freshman class. I am really going to work hard to do well in the fall during the preseason and know what I want to do when we get to the spring."

During the upcoming fall slate, Sam Houston hosts Temple College (DH) on Oct. 12 at 5 p.m.; Navarro College (10 inn) on Oct. 19 at 5 p.m.; Blinn College (DH) on Oct. 22 at noon and San Jacinto College (10 inn) on Oct. 27 at 5:30 p.m. The Kats also visit Galveston College in doubleheader play on Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.
