
Bearkats conclude fall tournament opener

The Sam Houston State tennis program wrapped up its opening fall weekend at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Islander Open as the Bearkats sent three players in the singles quarterfinals including Fabienne Gehwart who advances to the semis.
Gehwart, who notched wins against UTSA's Laura Cabrera (7-6, 6-4) and teammate Erna Barkovic (6-1, 6-3), eventually bowed out in the semifinals, falling to the Islanders' Judit Vives in a tight match, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 13-11, coming up one victory shy of a finals appearance.
Khee Yen Wee advanced to the quarterfinals before dropping a 7-6, 6-3, match to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Maria Maldonado. Wee defeated UTSA's Charleen Tiwari in straight sets in the opener, 6-1, 6-4, before downing Lamar's Hanna Elfving 6-5, 6-0.
Meanwhile, Erna Barkovic also opened with a win against an opponent for UTSA, defeating Sonia Madronal, 6-1, 6-7, 10-8. Then, Barkovic downed Kerry Galhos, 6-5, 6-3, from the host Islanders.
In doubles action, Casey and Milanovic earned their way into the semifinals. In the opener, the duo downed Darzyan and Fuster from UTRGV, 6-1, and followed suit with a 6-3 victory against Ivanova and Litvinova from Northwestern State. The duo fell to Belle and Trigona from A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-4.
Sam Houston returns to action on Friday at the Rice Invitational. The three-day tournament will be the second on the fall slate for the Bearkats under first-year head coach Rob Hubbard.
