More positives for Kats at Rice Invitational

Sam Houston State tennis posted another strong outing in its second fall tournament, highlighted by two consolation singles finals wins and another pair in doubles action at the three-day Rice Invitational.
In singles action, Ema Barkovic – Flight 4B – rebounded from a first-round loss to Houston's Sveva Mazzari (6-3, 6-4, 6-1) to defeat UTA's Valarie Lopez (7-5, 6-2) in the consolation first round before knocking off Denver's Claire Koke (6-4, 6-0) in the consolation finals.
In Flight 5A, Carrie Casey dropped an opening round match to Houston's Ana Glumac (6-0, 6-1) but surged in the consolation first round, dropping UTSA's Lina Halgreen (6-2, 6-1) before closing out play with a victory against Tulane's Sofia Kurtz in straight sets (6-1, 6-1).
Mila Milanovic advanced to the third-place playoff beginning her tournament with a 6-2, 6-4 victory against UTSA's Charleen Tiwari. In semifinals play, Milanovic fell to Southern Miss's Elena Roca, 6-4, 6-2. The third-place final did not take place vs. Texas State's Ammarah Tim.
Meanwhile, in doubles action, Fabienne Gettwart and Khee Yen Wee rebounded from an opening-round loss in Flight 2 to defeat Clef and Crovetti of Texas, 6-2. In the consolation finals, the duo defeated Southern Miss's Chen and Jerse, 6-2.
Wee also picked up a win in singles action, defeating Southern Miss's Tzu-Hui Chen, 6-1, 6-0. The consolation finals were ultimately suspended against SMU's Ellie Zogg. Likewise, Gettwart knocked off Denver's Garcia Mbbko, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (6), in the consolation first round but did not play a consolation finals match.
In the doubles third flight, Ema Barkovic and Diane Freidrichs also advanced to the consolation finals, doing so with a first-round consolation win against the Golden Eagles' Robinson and Torcello, 7-6 (5). In the finals, the Kats downed Elliott and Jamal of SMU, 6-4.
