Bearkats dominate during indoor opener

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Sam Houston State women's track and field program captured first-place in the squad's indoor opener at the Aggie Team Invitational on Friday.
The Bearkats tallied 125 points, besting 12 other competitors including four Southland Conference opponents. Sam Houston totaled five first-place finishers and 16 top-five marks in what was the first of six regular-season indoor meets this spring.
Camry Grigsby notched a pair of top spots including a mark of 2:17.49 to pace action in the 800-meter finals. The junior also anchored the 4x400-meter championship squad, alongside Kodii Church, Briana McCall and Jasmine Lewis with a time of 3:52.30.
Kristine Hanks also began her junior campaign on a strong foot, capturing first-place in the shot put at 49 feet, ¼ inches while setting a personal-best in a ninth-place finisher in the weight throw (51 feet, 8 ¼ inches).
Sam Houston went 1-2 in the pole vault, led by senior Hannah Callaway, who made her Bearkat debut with a first-place result of 12 feet, 8 ¼ inches. She was followed up by sophomore Margaret Lasalle at 12 feet, 2 ½ inches.
In the triple jump, Tristyn Allen converted 39 feet, 5 inches, for a first-place result. Other notables included freshman Baylee Lara's third-place debut in the 60-meter hurdles (8.69). Senior Briana McCall also took third in the 800 meters (2:17.65) as did sophomore Yarixza Rivera in the weight throw (58 feet, 5 ¾ inches).
Nine Sam Houston freshman recorded marks in their debuts including the 4x400-meter relay squad of Teona Spivey, Megan Smith and Baylee Lara – joined by junior Aaliyah Lane. The unit took fourth at 3:55.31.
