For the second straight weekend, the Sam Houston State bowling team is in position for another team title. They will enter Sunday's bracket play at the Brunswick Bearcat Open as the No. 4 seed in a tournament that features 17 teams currently ranked in the top 25 including nine of the top 10 teams.
After a slow start to the day, dropping two of their first three matches by a total of four pins, the fifth-ranked Kats responded in the final match of the day.
The Kats suffered a 1-pin 1019-1018 loss to Nebraska and lost by 3-pins to Maryland-Eastern Shore. Needing a big game to close out the day, the Kats responded with a 1,021-989 win over North Carolina A&T.
“Today was another day where our mental mistakes cost us,” head coach Brad Hagen said. “It's great we bounced back at the end of the day but we are too good of a team to lose matches that close.”
Also for the second straight weekend, the Bearkats will bowl against SFA in the first match of bracket play.
“We've been very solid during match play through the first two events so we need to mentally take advantage of that,” Hagen said.
Individually Madysen Keller led the way for the Kats with a 207 average, including a pair of 225 games which was the best of the day for the Bearkats.
