Kats face ranked foes at Louisiana Classic

LAFAYETTE, La. – Sam Houston State begins its second spring tournament, and seventh overall, from the two-day, 54-hole, Louisiana Classics from the par-72, 7,098-yard Oakbourne Country Club, on Monday.
The 16-team field will feature another strong test with No. 3 Illinois and No. 9 LSU headlining the field. Other participants include Kent State, host-Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Illinois, Southern Miss, No. 22 Texas A&M, Texas State, Toledo, UMKC, UTSA and UT Arlington.
The tournament gets underway with an 8 a.m. shotgun start Monday with the second round starting at 1 p.m. Final round action resumes Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. off holes 1-10. The event will be live streamed at no cost via RaginCajuns.com.
In its last tournament, Sam Houston struggled out of the gate but put together a strong second and third round to finish 14th at 9-over, 883, at the All-American Intercollegiate presented by Coca-Cola from the Golf Club of Houston.
Redshirt sophomore Jesse Massengale paced play for the Kats, using a second-round 68 and final-round 70 to finish in a six-way tie for 19th at 1-under, 215. The result marked the best finish and lowest overall three-round score for the sophomore in five tournaments this season.

“Last week we played against the No. 1 team in the country. We saw that it's just shooting under par each round and we've done that a ton of times. It's good to play against the best because we know we have to fire on all cylinders. We feel like we're good and want to keep getting better. Any time you go against those guys, you see how good you are and how close you are to being one of those type of teams.”
