The Sam Houston State women's golfers stand in first after the opening day of the Islander Classic in Corpus Christi.
The Kats opened with a 294 team score and then in the afternoon when the winds picked up, they shot two strokes better than any other team in the 12-squad field to take a nine-shot into Tuesday's final round.
“It was a windy day in Corpus which tested shot-making for all the players,” said women's coach Tommy Chain. “I thought the girls were disciplined and focused and stuck to the game plans which resulted in some good scores by the end of the day.”
Heather Shake opened with a 70 and after a second-round 74 finds herself at even par for the tournament and two strokes off the lead. Hannah Alberto is just two strokes back after rounds of 72 and 74 and stands in a tie for fourth place.
“For the second tournament in a row, Heather Shake and Hannah Alberto have put together back-to-back good rounds to lead the Kats after 36 holes,” Chain said. “Jenna Phillips (T14, plus-8) had a fine 74 in the first round and Gianti Mahardhika (T17, plus-9) followed that up with a 75 in the second round which is what you have to do.”
Kari Bush rounded out the scoring for the Bearkats who shot rounds of 80 and 77 and is in a tie for 31st.
The final round is Tuesday from the Corpus Christi Country Club.
