HUNTSVILLE – The 2017 season for Sam Houston State softball kicks off on Friday with a busy weekend as the Bearkats will take part in five games in three days at the ULM Mardi Gras Classic in Monroe, La., starting with the season opener against the Warhawks on Friday.
Sam Houston will also take on Prairie View A&M on Friday evening before battling league rival Northwestern State and Grambling State on Saturday. It will conclude the weekend with a morning meeting against SIU-Edwardsville on Sunday.

The Kats return 10 players from a 21-win team a year ago with a roster this season, including each of its top three arms. The roster also sports six freshmen and a pair of transfers.
Following its opening weekend at ULM, the Kats will head to Texas A&M on Wednesday, Feb. 15 to meet the Aggies before returning to Huntsville for the home opener on Feb. 22 against UTSA.
SERIES vs ULM
A former member of the Southland Conference, ULM is a familiar opponent for the Kats with 77 all-time meetings between the schools. Sam Houston currently owns a 48-29 edge and swept the Warhawks in two games in Huntsville last year in the first games between the teams since the 2011 season.
SERIES vs PRAIRIE VIEW A&M
The Kats own a 39-1 all-time record against the Panthers, winning the last five since Prairie View picked up a win in the 2012 season.
SERIES vs NORTHWESTERN STATE
Sam Houston holds a 65-45 all-time advantage against the Demons, but the Demons have won four of the last five meetings, including taking two of three a year ago.
