The Sam Houston women's golf team had a pair of monster rounds on the opening day of the HBU Husky Invitational to surge to a 12-stroke lead after 36 holes.
After rounds of 295 and 297, the Bearkats were the only team two go under 300 in each round. After the first 18-holes, the Kats trailed Texas State by one stroke, but the Kats were 13-shots better on the second half of the day to vault into the big lead.
“The wind really kicked up later in the day and this scores went up except for us,” said women's golf coach Tommy Chain. “We had a great game plan for the day and the girls stuck to it.“
Individually, the Kats have three of the top five golfers in the tournament, with Gianti Mahardhika leading everyone at 1-under. Her round of 69 was the best of the day and she stands as the only golfer under par.
Hannah Alberto is tied for third at 3-over par. She shot a 72 in the second round, which was the best round 2 score of the par 72 course. Heather Shake is in a tie for 5th at 5-over par.
