FRISCO – Sam Houston State's Tristyn Allen has been named Southland Conference Track and Field Women's Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Allen moved into the top spot in the Southland Conference in the triple jump by more than a foot with a leap of 41 feet, 5 ¼ inches. The sophomore finished sixth, besting competitors from Texas, Clemson and McNeese at the LSU Alumni Gold meet. The top-10 finish was the fourth for Allen in the event this spring.
Each school's sports information director nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own student-athlete. To receive honorable mention, an athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
Allen's performance was just a number of key marks on the weekend as Sam Houston split time between Baton Rouge, La., and the Rice Twilight from Houston.
Sam Houston has a weekend off from competition before heading to Houston for the Tom Tellez Invitational on May 5. This will be the final competition before the 2017 Southland Outdoor Championships in New Orleans on May 12-14.
